The Graduate Institute of Gender Studies at Kaohsiung Medical University was established in 2001. Based on the spirits of feminist theory and practices, we teach and research to promote gender equality and gender diversity. As a community of feminist scholars, we are devoted to understanding the diverse lives, issues, and voices of people of different sex, gender, sexuality, age, class, ethnicity, and cultures in different societies. We utilize feminist knowledge to inform our critical practices in our own lives, the university, and the broader community for the purpose of creating a just and equitable society.

The institute is the only graduate school of gender studies established in a medical university in Taiwan. Therefore, "gender, medicine and technoscience" is one of the two focused areas for our teaching and research. By using the resources of both KMU and KMU Chung-Ho memorial hospital, our institute has the advantage of specializing in the field. The other focused area for teaching and research is "gender, society and culture". The institute has established connections with women's organizations and gender-related NGOs in Kaohsiung and elsewhere; we also form cooperative relations with other graduate institutes and scholars of gender studies in Taiwan and abroad. The institute has achieved high quality in teaching and research, as well as promoting gender equality in the communities.
